Profile The Story Christian
Sorensen, "The Great Dane", first got involved with
musical events in the late 80's in college at UCSD in California.
Living in a 6 story dorm known as the "Zoo" in the center
of a 16,000 student population, it was pretty easy to get a good
starter crowd for a party. He and friends began throwing parties
that would consist of rigging up a series of students' stereos,
tape decks and speakers and blaring the music from all 6 floors
so that the whole building was vibrating to the point of being heard
miles away. Charging guys a very low $2 each and women free for
all you could drink, amazingly turned out to be profitable due to
the extremely low overheads. Booze was brought in cheaply from nearby
Mexico. Premises were free and thousands of customers (students)
were right there. Bouncers were college security paid for by the
University, musical equipment borrowed from students. On trips back
from Denmark, Christian would introduce the latest European Dance
music long before it came to the U.S market, which was a great advantage
since so much of the great 80's music came from Europe. The parties
became a big success drawing many hundreds, sometimes thousands
of people from not just college, but others that heard about it.
The musical presentation was by no means proper Djaying by today's
standards. There was no beat-matching, as none of us knew how to
do it, plus we mostly had tape-decks and not turntables. It was
more about "what" music was played rather than "how"
it was played. Christopher
Price, "The Eargasm", is another old man of music,
with an equally silly Dj name. He has held a weekly residency on
the island almost continuously since 1992. Accused of introducing
questionable European dance music of the early nineties to Cayman,
with then partner in crime James Bovell, he has since used Djaying
as an excuse to get royally ripped once a week. And when James couldn't
keep up the pace he conned a succession of likeminded suckers (Phat-E-Boom
etc), into sharing his passion for a dangerous beat and spiritual
breakdown. He has played everything from early 90's hardcore, happy
hardcore, DnB (Jungle was big in Cayman in the mid 90's), top 40
dance, trance, vocal house . . . you name it. In other words, he
is a complete music-slut who will play to the crowd. He has been
given a standing ovation at the end of the night twice in ten years
and he still recalls the rush, which is probably why he lives in
the past when people were "cool" and would dance to music
they had never heard before. He hopes anyone bored enough to read
this will consider taking action along these lines. In the meantime,
he will continue enjoy himself thoroughly whenever he is lucky enough
to get behind the decks with a full dancefloor, a powerful sound
system, a great lightshow and, above all, people who simply want
to have fun.
